Funeral Services: Your Options

As the saying goes, 'In the midst of life, we are in death.' Losing a loved one or thinking about planning your own funeral is very going to be a very nice or easy process. However, it is an unavoidable fact of life that at some point we all have to face our own mortality. Last year, after losing my mother and father in close succession and making the arrangements for their funerals and burial, I decided to put some plans in place for my own funeral service so that it is easier for those I leave behind. I have learnt a lot about funerals and I would like to share it here.

Benefits of Buying a Monument from a Funeral Home

Where should you buy a monument? Most bereaved families ask this question, and the choice usually lies between a funeral home and an independent artisan. It is common for families to approach an independent gravestone maker because they believe funeral homes are not in the business of making and selling headstones. However, most — if not all — funeral homes today sell monuments. In fact, there are situations when buying a headstone from a funeral home is better than purchasing from an independent artisan. Here are the top benefits of buying a monument from a funeral home.

Understand Cemetery Rules Better

Cemeteries have rules and regulations regarding gravestones, and knowing the guidelines before laying your loved one to rest is crucial. You don't want to get a call from cemetery management informing you that your headstone does not abide by the rules and must be taken down. In this regard, buying a monument from a funeral home is better because they understand the rules of most cemeteries within your state. Thus, they can guide you regarding the acceptable types of headstone you can choose for your loved one. Most importantly, it prevents the emotional turmoil you would have gone through if asked to remove a monument just because its dimensions do not meet cemetery guidelines.

More Room to Negotiate Price

You can negotiate the price of a monument if you decide to buy from an independent artisan. However, buying from a funeral home gives you more room to negotiate a better deal. This is particularly the case if you engage the same funeral home to arrange your loved one's funeral. A professional funeral director understands the significant value that clients bring to their business. Therefore, if a customer wants to include a headstone as part of a package, they deserve a good discount. As a result, you may pay a lower fee than a client who buys a monument from an independent artisan.

Monument Maintenance

When looking for funeral services, know that some homes include cemetery management in their portfolio. If you buy a headstone from such a funeral home and bury your loved one in the service provider's cemetery, you save a lot in maintenance costs. Besides, such funeral homes hire the best cleaning services who understand how different headstone materials behave in various conditions. Most importantly, it saves you the time and effort of looking for niche cleaning services. To learn more about monuments, contact a funeral home.
